The Healthy Church Vs. The Unhealthy Church: Prophecy

The healthy church knows that prophecy is a manifestation of the Spirit of God. She knows to expect warning, caution, or rebuke through God’s prophets as was always modeled in the Scriptures. However, the unhealthy church mocks God’s messengers and neglects that God has spoken. They refuse to humble themselves and to take the message delivered through God’s prophet directly to God and seek Him for the change needed.

God called the prophets. They didn’t earn their ‘title’ of prophet through attending seminary or being born into a royal family. They had no tangible proof that they heard God call them as a prophet or that they were relaying a message from God. In other words, there was no certificate or specific eligibility requirement. God did the choosing and that was all there was to it.

“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV)

The prophets carry a message from God through hearing His voice. The unhealthy church wrongly classifies prophecy as speaking wants into the air or through speaking Scriptures. That’s not prophecy. The ancient prophets (and even prophets today) were PERSECUTED for bringing hard words of warning, caution, and rebuke.

* “Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—” (Acts 7:52 NIV)

* “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:10-12 NIV)

* “Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.” (Matthew 23:34 NIV)

While there is a service gift of prophecy (described in Romans 12:4-8) that is an innate analytical ability to see strengths versus weaknesses, the prophecy found in the miraculous gifts (outlined in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11) is a manifestation of the Spirit of God. In the miraculous gifts, God specifically and deliberately spiritually manifests to speak to and empower the prophet. Often there are stated severe consequences for refusing God.

* “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.” (Jeremiah 1:17 NIV)

If you study the Scriptures, particularly in the books of the prophets, you will see that God always anointed His prophets with a message of caution, warning, rebuke and even impending judgment. He frequently delivered words about an adulterous people who bowed down to false gods and ignored their Creator God. The unhealthy church wants prophets to speak encouragement while they ignore God’s voice. But because the prophet’s life and the prophet’s family line are at stake, the prophet will refuse to be silent and will speak unfiltered as God directs.

* “For these are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction. They say to the seers, ‘See no more visions!’ and to the prophets, ‘Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!’” (Isaiah 30:9-11 NIV)

The Prophet’s Gift of Sarcasm

When I hear a pastor teaching nonsense and purposely distorting what the Scriptures teach, I always ask God about their motives.

Recently a pastor preached that God’s prophets are not true prophets if they’re not submitted to a church authority. I asked God why the pastor purposely brought that false doctrine. God said that the pastor is jealous of my giftings and wants to dissuade people from believing that I’m God’s prophet, apostle and deliverance minister. Do you think he’s jealous? God says he is.

To the pastor: There is absolutely NOTHING in the (Old Testament or New Testament) Scriptures that says that a prophet must be under the authority of a church body. No matter how much you want to twist the texts of the Bible, you are wrong. But perhaps, you’re counting on the laziness of your churchgoers to check the Scriptures for themselves. (Because let’s face it, you believe your congregants are actually more stupid than you are.)

But for the anointed true Christ follower all they would have to do is have a simple conversation with God and listen to His answer. Because we are supposed to hear God, right? (Can you hear the sarcasm in my words?) So, who is up for the challenge? All you would need to do is simply ask God. “God, is Tammie Edwards your prophet?” Or you could ask “God, do your prophets need to be a member of a church that teaches false doctrine in order to be under your authority as the head of the church?”

Maybe you could ask a question that you don’t really want to hear the answer to, like “God, is the pastor at my church teaching false doctrine?” Another possible question might be “God, is the pastor of my church an idiot?” Perhaps you’re not practiced at asking God questions because you’ve only been taught to give God all your wise advice (Did you hear the sarcasm again?).

Try actually having a conversation with God where you listen to His voice and SEEK HIM rather than tell Him.

Extinguish Your Giftings?

Over the years that I have not belonged to a church family (at a church building), I have asked the Lord many times to provide a place that I could have as a church home. Oh, He sends me, but every time He shows me that I’m not welcome.

This morning, the first words I heard from the Lord were “they want to extinguish your gifts”. That fired me up before my head was off the pillow. The Lord went on to say that not one of the local churches could handle having me in their congregation without wanting to strip the titles from me that God has given me. The problem is that they can’t “compete” with the anointing that God has entrusted me with. They would want to take away the title “prophet” because they don’t hear God and would want to pretend that I don’t either. God said that they would not permit me to be God’s apostle in their presence because that would make me more worthy than their pastors at discussing doctrine. Then the devil would lose all the ground that he has managed to take. The devil will fight for that through any vessel that is not fully submitted to God (and there are plenty of them in the churches).

So I asked God, “Does that mean that I won’t ever get to have a church home?” The Lord answered “maybe”.

Then the question came to my mind as though it had been deliberately stationed there. “Why would I want to be part of a church family that would want to extinguish my giftings and denounce my relationship with God?” I wouldn’t!

So, in all these years that I have been searching for a church home, God was using that search to show me the mess that the church has become. Most of the churches would deny my rights in the Kingdom of God just because I’m a female. For sure, those churches wouldn’t accept that I’m God’s prophet or apostle because they believe that a woman must be silent … and God doesn’t anoint apostles or prophets to be silent. I guess that I must conclude that I’m just not welcome and be good with that.

God is willing for me to be a spectator of the church, but my first allegiance must always be to doing His will. That can’t happen simultaneously with being silent in the church.

Visions To His Prophet

There have been many times in my years as a prophet when God has given me visions. I even once had a vision of the Rapture and Jesus ascending on the clouds. While that may or may not actually happen in my lifetime, it doesn’t change God’s choice to use me as His prophet.

The apostle Paul believed that the return of Christ was imminent. That belief did not cause Paul to be a false apostle even though it did not take place in his lifetime. God often works with His apostles and prophets vastly different than He does with other Christian leaders. There are times when He wants us to have an urgency to deliver the message. At times, He wants us to inspect our standing with Him and how it affects the current generation. While visions can be very clearly seen, their meaning is often meant to spur the apostle or prophet forward more than to predict the future.

The book of Revelation was a vision delivered through John. He saw things that would actually come to pass but not in his lifetime. Some of those things were happenings in the spiritual realm rather than the physical realm. That those things didn’t happen in his lifetime, did not disqualify the message as being from God. Isaiah’s prophecies about the coming Christ were hundreds of years before Jesus appeared in flesh. It did not invalidate Isaiah’s standing as a prophet that Christ did not appear in his lifetime.

God often talks to me about President Trump, not because I will effect the outcomes of what Trump will do or ever even speak to the man. God wants me to be aware of what He is doing through the president of our country. Many of the prophets of old did deliver messages to the kings of Israel. And God has had me deliver a few messages to President Trump in the form of letters, emails, and workbooks that I created. Whether or not Trump ever actually saw those things doesn’t have anything to do with what God was doing through me. He told me to do something specific and I did it. That’s where my responsibility ends until God tells me to pursue it further or to do something additional. (I have received a few short typed letters with Trump’s signature, but that doesn’t mean anything necessarily.) One email from me with a message from God warned Trump of a betrayal that was coming … and it did happen.

When God asks you to do something, it’s often more about you learning to obey God, to be right where He wants you, or to demonstrate an ability that He has given you. God saw everything about your life before He even created you to live it. He knows the beginning from the end.

A prophet never really knows at the time if God is giving future insight or checking the heart of His prophet. God has told me that Trump will not serve for his entire second term and it haunts me because I have grown to highly respect and even love the man. That may not be a future prediction. It may be about causing my heart to stay involved in what Trump is accomplishing. That’s what I hope it is. Either way God chooses what He tells His prophet and how He tells the prophet to deliver the message. Whether it is a warning that comes to pass or not isn’t what is important to God. We can assess in hindsight some of the behind the scenes things that could have been going on. Read about Jonah. Jonah delivered a message that was meant to change hearts, not to predict the future.
